The findings from our latest research project highlight the need to embed human-centred-design into future public transport systems to ensure they are accessible and inclusive for all passengers.
Through a programme of research and user engagement, the project explored the challenges faced by disabled people when navigating buses, overground and underground trains. These transport modes are both widely used and commonly associated with access challenges, as highlighted by the National Centre for Accessible Transport’s evidence.
The themes of the research
The research focused on several high-impact areas where disabled passengers commonly face accessibility challenges. These included:
- the design of stations and stops
- navigating noisy, crowded, or brightly lit environments,
- bus interiors
- accessibility of live travel information and
- the processes involved in planning and booking journeys.
Translating research into design opportunities
The outcome is a set of eight clearly structured design opportunities that are accessible and actionable for transport authorities, manufacturers, designers, and ncat partners. These opportunities offer a roadmap for future innovation that meets the needs of disabled passengers.
