About this research
Designability wanted to understand when and where it feels like the world around you isn’t designed with you in mind, and where things do work well, so we can help change what gets designed next.
We ran a series of surveys which were open to:
- A disabled and/or older person
- An unpaid carer or someone who regularly supports a disabled person
- A parent of a disabled child, young person or adult
The Unfair Index surveys are now closed and we will be releasing the findings in Summer 2026.
Who are Designability?
Designability is a UK charity that designs products and services with and for disabled people*. Our aim is to make everyday life easier, fairer and more accessible.
We always try to choose the route that helps the greatest number of people.
This might mean:
- Providing something ourselves (for free, subsidised or at a fair price)
- Working with others who can reach more people through the commercial market, or
- Providing freely available design guidance.
Any profits or royalties from Designability products or services are used to fund more inclusive design work.
*We use the Social Model of Disability which means we focus on the barriers in the world around you. Not your body or diagnosis. We also use the term ‘disabled people’. Please feel free to use any words that feel right for you or the person you care for.
When we say ‘disabled people’, we include neurodivergent people (for example, autistic, ADHD, dyslexic), people with mental health conditions, chronic illness, learning disabilities, sensory and physical impairments.
