The Challenge

Individuals living with dementia may become bored or feeling isolated due to inactivity. Music is a wonderful way to assist them in becoming connected and engaged with the things happening around them. However, music players can be complex to operate and frustrating for users and their carers. We wanted to design a desirable music player that was very simple to use by all.

The Outcome

With this new player, family and friends can upload the playlist and adjust the volume, and the player is then fully operational through the use of lifting and closing the lid to turn it on and off, and one button to change the track. The music will always continue from where it was last stopped. The styling is also reminiscent of old radios and is instantly recognisable as something which plays music.

Our Design Process

Our research has highlighted the therapeutic benefits of music on people with dementia both for improving the quality of life, especially when living alone, and for its healthy restorative effects on cognizance and lucidity. Unfortunately, many people with memory problems are unable to operate the modern music playing devices available. We worked with users and their families to test a number of prototype ideas and we chose the design that most people found easy to use. We were also keen to ensure our overall design was beautiful and desirable and our testers were able to share ideas of what they wanted the end product to look like.

Benefits and Features

The Simple Music Player is extremely easy to use, even for those with reduced dexterity. The music begins to play when the lid is lifted and if you press the large button under the lid you can skip to the next track. The volume is set by family members or carers and cannot accidentally be changed. The songs are selected and downloaded via a USB link from a Windows, Apple or Linux PC, allowing you to pick your own playlist.

  • Volume is set by family or carers through a pencil-point hole and cannot be accidentally changed
  • Capacity of 4GB, nearly 1000 songs
  • Comes with 5 Big Band songs - we recommend loading your own music up for a personal, musical experience
  • 'Drag and Drop' music from your PC to your Player via USB, no software to install
  • Power requirements: Local mains supply
