Why we invented a pushchair suitable for wheelchair users

All parenting journeys should be equal

Disabled parents who use a wheelchair have no safe way to take their baby or toddler out independently. It can mean a ‘simple’ trip to the shops or the park is impossible. Many parents choose to have their child sitting on their lap, which is often unsafe and uncomfortable.

There was no widely available pushchair they can use so people have been sacrificing their independence to rely on a non-disabled relative or friend. Or, worse still, not gone out at all.

As well as the practical difficulties, disabled parents have told us about the emotional impact of having to be dependent on others to go out with their baby or toddler. People are left feeling a ‘lesser’ parent.

Accessible pushchair in action

The world's first accessible pushchair

Changing the lives of up to 20,000 people in the UK alone

Our team worked over a number of months on a potential design for an accessible pushchair.

Thanks to support from the well-known pushchair manufacturer, Mamas and Papas, the pushchair completed safety testing in March 2023 to ensure compliance with British Safety Standard BS EN 1888.

We carried out in-person prototype trials with parents who are manual wheelchair users, with more parents providing feedback online.

Their feedback and insight was used to create our innovative final design: the first accessible pushchair designed for mass manufacture.

Working on getting more Accessible Pushchairs out in the UK

  • We had hoped to find a manufacturer who would collaborate with us on this, but this hasn’t happened, so we’re going to do it ourselves.

  • In the next 12 months, you will have the opportunity to purchase an Accessible Pushchair in the UK as part of a limited run.

  • The product will be suitable from birth and will have a carrycot/bassinet option included.

  • We will need to take on social finance and sell the product for £699.

Accessible Pushchair FAQs

We are just finalising the details on a production run which we will do ourselves in-house. These will be available to purchase in the next 12 months. Register to buy to be the first to know when they become available.

We are looking to retail the accessible pushchair at £699, at a similar level to non-accessible pushchairs on the market. This cost will also include the parts and labour required to adapt the rear wheels and braking system to make it accessible for manual wheelchair users.

We will be releasing this product in the UK first before we explore international shipping and provision. However, please register your interest so we can monitor how much demand there is for an Accessible Pushchair overseas.

Yes! It’s really important to have the involvement of a broad range of disabled people for our projects. If you’d like to help us develop and test new products and services sign up to our projects newsletter below to hear about the latest opportunities.
