Designability was first established in the UK in 1968 under its former name, Bath Institute of Medical Engineering.

A registered charity

We are a charity registered in England and Wales with charity no. 256335 and a company limited by guarantee registered in England and Wales with company number 933932.

Our registered office is Wolfson Centre, Department D1, Royal United Hospital, BATH, BA1 3NG.

Day to day responsibility for the running of Designability is delegated to our Chief Executive and Leadership Team.

Our work is overseen by four main bodies:

Our Board of Trustees

Our unpaid Board of Trustees meets at least three times per year and is responsible for ensuring that we meet our charitable objectives and are run according to our Articles of Association and Memorandum of Association.

Our Officers

Our unpaid Officers support and advise our Board of Trustees. Our Honorary Secretary is appointed by the University of Bath and our Honorary Assistant Secretary is appointed by our Trustees.

Our Committees

Designability has two principal goverance committees which have been established to monitor our projects and research activities and to review our financial management.

Our Projects and Research Governance Committee

The purpose of our Projects and Research Governance Committee is to:

  • Review all current and new projects, to ensure that they are appropriate and progressing according to timescale and budget;
  • Ensure external peer reviews are carried out and review exploitation and commercialisation of products;
  • Review risks arising from research studies and monitor requests for ethical approval.

Our Finance and Audit Committee

The Finance and Audit Committee meet four times a year to review income and expenditure against budget and to ensure that the charity adheres to set financial controls.
