Funding free Wizzybugs for children who need them
So far, Designability has managed to build over 300 Wizzybugs, thanks to generous support and donations.
These Wizzybugs have helped 500 children across the UK to date. Children who are living with conditions such as cerebral palsy, spinal muscular atrophy, spina bifida and muscular dystrophy.
But we know that there are many more children out there who could benefit from having a Wizzy and we want to be able to offer them one free of charge because the NHS generally does not fund this kind of device for very young children.
A child’s first taste of freedom
Across the UK, there are hundreds of children who rely on others to move them around. Your support could help us to give them their first taste of freedom with a Wizzybug. They will be able to play and explore the world around them as they choose.
Each Wizzybug on the loan scheme costs us £4,750 to fund. That covers the parts, build, occupational therapy appointment, ongoing support, any repairs needed and the ability to refurbish each ‘bug to help another two children.
Any small part you can contribute will get us a step closer to funding another child’s very first powered wheelchair.
Wizzybug is fun and appealing to children. It gives youngsters like Noah the chance to move around on their own, without the help of mum or dad. They can play with their siblings like Dexter, have fun with their friends and go where they choose to go.
We designed it to make it look appealing to toddlers so that they don’t feel as if it’s another piece of medical equipment.
Having access to a powered mobility device like Wizzybug means that children can learn spatial awareness and vital movement skills which will prepare them for a bigger chair as they get older.
