Designability is a national charity transforming the lives of disabled people and those living with a long term health condition.
Enabling happiness in response to real needs
We are a team of engineers and designers with a passion for creating life-changing assistive technologies. We carry out original research and create products that help people who are facing challenges every day.
We want better technology to be more accessible to everyone. Our team follow the principles of human-centred design which means that everything we develop is done in response to what people tell us they need.
Our aim is for people to achieve greater independence and happiness in their lives – goals that benefit all of society.
We work with you, the experts: end-users, carers and health professionals. It is you that help us understand the problem, find a solution and test it in real life situations.
Conducting research to uncover new ideas
Research is where we start. It helps us understand people’s needs, opens up new technologies and leads to the development of new products.
We are always learning and sharing our knowledge. We collaborate with a range of university academic departments around the UK, the NHS and partner other charities to help to maximise our impact on as many people as we can.
Developing new, helpful products
We create great looking, easy-to-use products that go beyond basic functionality. And we partner with industry to help as many people as we can – we’ve transformed over 250,000 lives in the last 50 years.
As a charity, our mission is get the right products into the hands of those who need them. We build prototypes and develop new products in response to specific needs, in the hope that our products will inspire new markets to blossom.
A charity that designs
All of our work relies on donations.
People often confuse our cause with a design agency, but everything we do is not-for-profit. Every penny we receive from product royalties is put back into developing even more useful technologies.
To safeguard our mission, we spend every penny wisely. This means carefully filtering our activities to balance focus between our areas of expertise and solving new problems where the need is greatest.
